According to S.T.Coleridge,Imagination has two types 1)Primary imagination and 2) Secondary imagination.
1) Primary imagination means,whatever ideas, impressions or pictures we get from external world by the senses that power is called Primary imagination. These imaginations are involuntary or unwilling action of the human mind. Human mind gets ideas, impressions and sensations from the outside world unconsciously. Outside world is greater source of Primary imagination.
Primary imagination is the power of living and it is the major source of all human perception. It means the Primary imagination is universal. It is occupied by all human beings.
2) The Secondary imagination is an exceptional and distinctive attribute to the artist. Artistic creation is possible only because of the secondary imagination. The secondary imagination is more active and conscious on the contrary the Primary imagination is inactive and unconscious in working.
The secondary imagination starts working when Primary imagination perceive something. It means the Primary imagination is the raw material to the Secondary imagination. The only because of will power and intellect, the secondary imagination gives proper order to the raw material provided by the Primary imagination. The secondary imagination gives proper shape and mould to make it beautiful.The secondary imagination has great shaping and modifying power.
Fancy is not a creative power. It deals with fixities and certainties. It only gather whatever perceives into beautiful shapes. It doesn't fuse and unify like Imagination.
